What is Moxibustion?

Moxibustion is a traditional Chinese medicine therapy that involves burning dried mugwort (Artemisia vulgaris) near or on specific points of the body. This ancient healing practice has been used for thousands of years alongside acupuncture to promote healing, improve circulation, and strengthen the body's vital energy (Qi).

The warmth generated by moxibustion penetrates deeply into the body, stimulating circulation and promoting the smooth flow of Qi and blood throughout the meridians.

Results of moxibustion therapy can vary in each individual and are not guaranteed.

How Does Moxibustion Work?

Moxibustion works by applying heat to specific acupuncture points or areas of the body. There are two main types of moxibustion:

Direct Moxibustion

A small cone of moxa is placed directly on the skin at an acupuncture point and burned. This method is less commonly used today.

Indirect Moxibustion

The more common and safer method where moxa is held above the skin or placed on an acupuncture needle. The practitioner may also use a moxa stick held close to the skin.

The gentle heat from moxibustion is believed to warm the meridians, expel cold, and stimulate the flow of Qi and blood, supporting the body's natural healing processes.

Potential Benefits of Moxibustion

Moxibustion may be used to address a variety of health concerns:

Pain Relief

May help with chronic pain conditions, especially those aggravated by cold.

Digestive Support

May assist with digestive issues related to cold or weakness in the system.

Immune Support

May help strengthen the body's natural defenses against illness.

Circulation

May promote blood flow and reduce stagnation throughout the body.

Energy & Vitality

May help boost vitality and address exhaustion or fatigue.

Women's Health

May support menstrual health and fertility concerns.

Breech Presentation: Moxibustion may be used to encourage breech babies to turn (under appropriate care from qualified practitioners).

What to Expect During a Moxibustion Session

During a moxibustion session, you will typically lie comfortably on a treatment table. The practitioner will light the moxa and hold it close to the treatment points. You should feel a pleasant, warming sensation. The practitioner will monitor the heat closely to ensure your comfort and safety.

Sessions typically last 15-30 minutes. There is a characteristic smell from the burning mugwort, which many people find pleasant and calming.

Is Moxibustion Safe?

When performed by a qualified practitioner, moxibustion is generally considered safe. Our practitioners are trained in proper techniques to ensure your comfort and safety throughout the treatment.

Precautions:

  • May not be suitable for those with heat conditions or fever
  • Should be used with caution during pregnancy (only by trained practitioners)
  • Not recommended for areas with broken skin or inflammation
  • Those sensitive to smoke should inform their practitioner

Combining Moxibustion with Other Therapies

Moxibustion is often used in combination with other Traditional Chinese Medicine modalities for enhanced therapeutic effect:

  • Acupuncture: Moxibustion and acupuncture complement each other well, with moxa often applied to acupuncture needles
  • Cupping: Both therapies can be used in the same session for comprehensive treatment
  • Chinese Herbal Medicine: Internal herbs may support the warming effects of moxibustion

Your practitioner will recommend the best combination of therapies based on your individual health needs and TCM diagnosis.
